Meanwhile, kidney stones are not a new medical problem, according to the National Kidney & Urologic Diseases Information Clearinghouse (NKUDIC), a component of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (National Institutes of Health). In fact scientists have found evidence of kidney stones "…in a 7,000-year-old Egyptian mummy" (NIH). The NIH explains that the number of patients with kidney stones "has been increasing over the past 30 years" and researchers are not sure why. In the late 1970s, not even 4% of the American population had kidney stones but by the 1990s more than 5% of the population suffered from kidney stones (NIH). Caucasian men are the most likely people to get kidney stones, and from the age of 40 up to 70 men are particularly susceptible to kidney stones (NIH).

Kidney stones can be several shapes, even jagged shaped, which can be more painful than a smooth stone, the NIH explains.
Some common causes, in addition to what has already been described in this paper, include: gout; excess Vitamin D; "hyperuricosuria" (a disorder caused by uric acid metabolism); "calcium-based antacids"; and "urinary tract infections" (NIH). The most common preventative measure the NIH recommends -- echoing what the Mayo Clinic suggests -- is to drink more water, up to "2 quarts" a day.

In conclusion, from the literature it is clear that younger men and women are the least likely to develop painful kidney stones, but drinking sufficient water every day, even for those under the age of 40, would seem to be a good practice, a good habit to get into. And also, avoiding meat and poultry, avoiding beets, sweet potatoes, chocolate, nuts, tea, soy products -- and using antacids that don't have a calcium base, are worthwhile suggestions from the literature.
