Dennis Hong: My Seven Species of Robot

In this video, Dennis Hong uses most of the speech to introduce each type of robot, its dynamics, and its functions. He is quite detailed about how the robots manage to move. For some, Mr. Hong offers information about its creation process and the various stages of prototype in their development.

Mr Hong ends the video by explaining his creative process. When he wakes up early in the morning, for example, he closes his eyes, opens them, and writes down his impressions. Occasionally, he has a good idea, which he then uses in his work. He also mentions, however, that creativity is only effective when combined with the tools that can be gained from study and hard work. Finally, he mentions one of the most important ingredients of his and his students' work as having fun.

Important Ideas

The STriDER, or Self-Excited Tripedal Dynamic Experimental Robot, has three legs and uses passive dynamic locomotion to walk, like human beings do.

There are two STriDER prototypes; the second had a lighter design and could walk successfully.
