Breastfeeding in public

Article of analysis

Why are we still so squeamish about breastfeeding? By Kelly Wallace.

The article above was written by Kelly Wallace who was a CNN correspondent at the time he wrote the article. Being a correspondent of the new network, the writer strived to remain professional throughout the article, giving the two sides to the story through the voices of other opinion holders. The topic under discussion here is the morality of breastfeeding in public and whether the women doing the same are justified or should stop. The author starts with presenting a famous incident of breastfeeding in public by a celebrity that was posted online and went viral, evoking mixed reactions. He also arouses the reader’s attention by mentioning renown cases of businesses that had locked out or stopped women who were breastfeeding in their premises. The writer then goes on to document reactions of various people, both famous and local people to the debate on public breastfeeding.

The reason why the writer of this article chose to discuss the topic is because despite a lot having changed over the years, the issue of public breastfeeding has not been fully accepted as late as 2014 when the article was being written.
Being that the article is based in the US culture and physical setting, the topic is of great concern. As the writer points out, there are models and other famous personalities that dress in a manner leaving little to imagination, yet no one raises concern, yet people have issues with a woman using her noble part of the body to do the function for which it was created. This is what interest me most in the article, since I feel there needs to be a realistic paradigm shift in our thought process and socialization.

This article is very relevant to our contemporary socialization process since it directly castigates our hypocritical ways and the open bias against women with babies of breastfeeding age. This act is likely to cause such women to shun public breastfeeding and in effect lead to malnutrition of the babies.
